I feel for Christina. She can’t wear just anything. But, I also feel like she has it in her head that she has really very limited options. And I think Christian Siriano agrees. Strapless (??), super-structured, stiff fabric. It’s easier to dress her for non-red carpet stuff because you can go shorter to balance things out, use more curve-friendly knits, etc. But, all of this fashion-y stuff is modifiable. Isn’t that kind of the point of “couture?” (Well, one of them anyway.) It’s hand-made, tailored precisely to fit the wearer perfectly. Runway looks are “edited”/customized all the time. Ok, so since day looks are not her main challenge, here are some ideas for some red carpet looks for Ms. Hendricks.
Nanette Lepore
Call up Nanette, get this one in a floor-length version. Maybe add a belt/waistband. Maybe not.
Floor length version. Hair down. Switch bodice to sleeveless.
Marchesa
No modifications needed. Except the shoes. The runway shoes suck. Actually, I feel like this general shape would work really well for her. Half-sweetheart one-shoulder with narrow but not tight ankle-length skirt. Why didn’t she wear this to the Emmys? And the color is perfect. Christina, seriously, call me.
No modifications needed, except replace the runway shoes. Also, doesn’t have to be in red. The white ground, replacing the red with marigold? Or red. Or something else. Just sayin.
Oscar de la Renta
This would have to be tailored for CH, as it would have to be for anyone, being a pantsuit and all. And possibly the lower few inches of the low V sewn closed if it’s too revealing on her. I think this would be gorgeous on her. Some of those ankle-cuff sandals. Killer.
I love this for Christina, but I think it would need lots of modifications. If I’m on a show like Mad Men that requires me to be in 50s/60s-wear all the time, I might not be too into wearing a retro piece like this for real life. Also, I think this look, as is, might be a little too frou-frou for CH. And the shoes suck. What the hell? Do these designers intentionally pick boring-ass shoes for the runway so as not to compete with the look, or do they just have crap taste in shoes? Anyway, keep the skirt exactly as is (SO beautiful), keep the belt and the off-shoulder-boat-neck, but replace the pink lace top with a super-sleek just solid black matte jersey, no lace, just straight edges.
J. Mendel
I would put this one on her either in this length and the belt is fine, OR keep the strong belt but if you’re going to make it longer to make it red carpet-styles, make it a strong belt but with some bling and cut the skirt in a narrow wrap/tulip shape.
Ralph Lauren
This whole Ralph Lauren collection is giving me shades of Jim Carrey in The Mask, but I think this general idea would be awesomeness on Christina. Flowy black pantsuit, bright neck scarf. As Joanie says, “Men love scarves!”
